Youth Law Australia is a community legal service that provides free and confidential legal advice, assistance and referrals to anyone 25 or  under. An accredited family dispute resolution practitioner (called low cost legal aid canterbury a ‘chairperson’) from our service will facilitate the dispute resolution conference. If a family dispute resolution practitioner assesses that it is appropriate to proceed to a family dispute resolution conference, lawyers will be consulted to confirm a conference date. Usually, the more availability you can offer, the more quickly the conference can be booked. Our case managers speak to each party individually and any independent children’s lawyer appointed.

LawAccess NSW is the best place to start to resolve a legal problem in NSW. It is a free government telephone service that provides legal information, advice and referrals for people who have a legal problem in NSW. The Welfare Rights Centre provides free legal information, advice and representation for NSW residents, specialising in social security law and family assistance law and its administration by Centrelink. You must tell your lawyer or Legal Aid NSW if you are worried about your safety at a mediation, or if you are worried about your children’s safety if the mediation happens.

Helen is qualified in law and psychology, and is an experienced in-house family dispute resolution practitioner, having been with the service since 2011. Free legal advice is available to any person on many legal matters. Our legal staff will identify a client's problem, inform a client of their rights and obligations and help them understand what courses of action can be taken. Our legal staff may also provide further assistance where appropriate. The Federal Circuit and Family Court expects parties to attempt to resolve disputes through compromise, discussion, and dispute resolution, provided it is safe to do so and urgent exceptions do not apply.
Community Law Canterbury offers a general legal advice service, information services, specialist advice, and education services. Community legal centres help thousands of people every single day with a whole range of issues – housing, fines, family matters, domestic and family violence, and more. The mediation will be run by an experienced family dispute resolution practitioner.

Each party has the right to obtain their own legal advice at any stage of the family dispute resolution process. We call the family dispute resolution practitioners who facilitate conferences 'chairpersons'. We have other family dispute resolution practitioners who oversee our case management program. Usually, this service will only involve one or two meetings with a Family Legal Advice Service lawyer. If you want to get more legal advice, you’ll need to either apply for legal aid or pay for the advice yourself. In 2017, we initiated a review of the CLSP to ensure it aligned with current expectations regarding the planning and delivery of legal services and accountability for expenditure of public money.

Having an extensive experience of tax, property, valuations, accounts and pension knowledge ensures you have a clear picture of the finances and assets from the beginning. You don’t have to pay an up-front fee for Legal Aid NSW mediation. However, if you get a cash payment of $30,000 or more in your property settlement you must pay a contribution towards the cost of your lawyer. If you and your ex-partner reach an agreement at mediation, you won’t be given a section 60I certificate. If you later want to apply for parenting orders, you will need to attend mediation again unless you are exempt. The mediator doesn’t need any written or other evidence of family violence to decide that mediation is not appropriate for this reason.

A family dispute resolution practitioner since 2020, Mary-Jo joined Victoria Legal Aid in 2023, where she now facilitates conferences, oversees clinical placements, and offers peer support and staff supervision.
