The programme is bursting at the sequinned seams, celebrating all corners of the LGBTQIA+ community and boasting more than 100 community events, dance parties, theatre and music, culminating with the globally renowned Parade. TheSydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Paradeis all aboutdancing, partying,dressing up, being wild and feeling the unity that this celebration embraces. Around 500,000 people come out to watch the parade, usually dressed up in rainbow outfits, making it a long street party along the parade route. It is free to attend and is always followed by anOfficialMardi Gras After party and Concert.
In this special anniversary year, the 2018 Festival focuses on the theme ‘40 YEARS OF EVOLUTION’. Mardi Gras Sydney is a month-long event that coincides with the other Carnival/Mardi Gras events taking place around the world in February/March. It usually starts with the super popular Bondi Beach Party and a large Fair Day where small LGBTQ businesses get to strut their stuff. It continues with a variety of queer events taking place throughout the city – a mix of parties, art gatherings, festivals, pool parties, and comedies.

The 2021 Mardi Gras theme is ‘RISE’ a poignant message during the challenge and hardship that the last 12 months has presented. The theme is a call to action that now is the time to rise again through love, compassion, respect and understanding, and to work together to make the world a better place for all. Christmas is a time for celebration, and the right decorations can truly set the mood for the season.

The 2025 festival will be filled with unforgettable moments, where the power of love, resilience, and visibility will once again take centre  stage. And ultimately, we want to see an end to family, domestic and sexual violence in our communities. Then head over to the Art Gallery of NSW for an after-hours showcase of colourful queer artistry on 2 March. You’ll be able to catch some seriously talented performance artists, plus installations, stories, live tunes, and gallery tours—all centred around this year’s Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras theme, ‘United We Shine’.
